Distortion from P bass

Gently tap the pickups with a plastic screw driver handle with the volume up, and the amp on. You will probably hear a quiet thump. Anything more points to a possible bad pickup, or loose connextions within.

Oddly enough, I've stopped getting the distorted sound. Not sure what happened . I didn't change anything. This is very strange to say the least.

It'll be back. You can probably rule out loose pickup windings.

No, I go straight into the interface and set the gain well below the point of clipping.

Which interface is it? I have a UR22MKII and it distorts with any guitar plugged straight in. This is a known thing. Something to do with USB voltage supply. Try a passive DI box between bass and interface or DI out of the amp into the interface, and see if that helps.
