DIY build basscombo

Just want to share my latest project. A diy basscombo.

I was tired of lifting those big cabinets. Even if you buy the smallest one available, you still have to lift it. I''m laisy... ;) And was jalous at our singer. She walked with a little amp-cabinet with wheeles and handlebar. A trolley. So I decided to build a trolley basscombo

I bought a secondhand Ashdown Superfly 2x250 amp and stripped it from its aluminium bodyparts. Down to its rectangular metal casing

The drivers are from Eminence. S2012 and a Eminence APT80 horn. I use a Eminence adjustable crossover, PX23K5. Appr 3500hZ. The crossover can be found underneath the amp itself. Just open the little hatch on top of the cab. there some space to store cables as well. It's damn hardto reach the rearend of the actual amp. Connecting anything isn't easy. How many times do you use these connection anyway?

Wheels, corners, handlebar etc. are just standard parts, widely available on the internet.

It's constructed from 18mm (3/4") birch plywood

The result: it's perfect for the job! Easy to transport.
The sound? Well, I'm not an audiospecialist. The sound comes "as is". It's not designed for soundquality. But anyway, the sound is awesome. When I'm playing in the band, standing next to the combo, the sound is perfect! No need to turn up the volume.
The bad news is: there's a high frequency noise. It's either the amp or the crossover. Need to sort this out A Superfly is not the best choice if you're looking for an amp... ;)

Modeled it in Solidworks indeed.

The positioning of the controls is a well thought one. Itś perfect when it's on the ground.
The amp is a 2x250 model. I'm thinking of adding a 15" cab to it. Trolley style ;)
When the combo is positioned on the 15" cab, you still have perfect acces to the controls.

If there's any interest, I can put the drawiings online. I'm dutch, we use the metric system. millimeters

Nice work, I'd imagine with the 12 and tweet you've plenty of volume for smaller venues and practice.

May I suggest you add instead of a 15 another S2012? Same box volume and tuning, too. Less chance for sonic issues to crop up by using identical drivers etc.

I'm not dutch, though She is. Maybe that's why I use metric for my builds, also in modeled in Solidworks though nothing approaching your skill.

Actually I prefer metric because I find it more convenient than dealing with all the cumulative fractions in customary units.

May I suggest you add instead of a 15 another S2012? Same box volume and tuning, too. Less chance for sonic issues to crop up by using identical drivers etc.

I build it by hand. I did not correct the drawings for adjustments after the build. But, if I can build one, anyone can. A little bit of commen sence and a litle craftmenship. When I build the combo I found out not everything is 100% accurate. Might have to do with building it by hand. I did not use a cnc router.

Cuts for the wheels and pull out handle where made after glueing the panels together.
As well as all chamfers and fillets (rouded corners)
First mount the amp-brackets before glueing and screwing the top. Verify if it's possible to glue and screw in the adjustable crossover. It's mounted underneath the amp. Though able to reach it ofcourse.

Flightcase-like parts are made by Penn Elcom. Shoud be plenty online stores to buy from.

It's painted with a Duratex kind of paint. Professionel speaker with. Applied with a texture roller. Also widely available at online stores for pro audio diy. As well as the Penn Elcom parts and the grill.


By the way, thanx for the suggestion! As a matter of fact, I have a unused Eminence s2012 available. I just have to build a sub. Saves me a couple of Euro's....

Nice job!

Cross-overs don't cause noise, although I suppose it's theoretically possible that it could cause the amp to misbehave.
It's much more likely that the SuperFly is the culprit. It never got much love, and that could be one of the reasons.

If the issue is a high-pitched whine that doesn't go away with the equalizer on the amp you might try a passive high pass filter on the tweeter. Probably somewhere at 12kHz.

RE your S2012 sub, just make it the same Vb and Fb as your combo and you're golden ;)
