DIY Pedal Design

Ive just started to build my own pedals so i find this really interesting.

I built a Fuzz clone that didnt work very well, i think i rushed into it too quickyl. So, i never got round to decorating the enclosure. My next project is a booster, but im going to fit that in an old MXR Script logo Phase 90 enclosure that i have (complete with jacks and switch/pot, the circuit was destroyed by a leaky battery).

Bound to confuse a few people!


I'm also an EHX fan, so i probably will apply decals straight to the ally box, rather than paint it.
 
Hey Jimmy, do you make and sell pedals or is this just a "buy the parts and put it together yourself" kind of thing? Like putting together model cars?

Sweet designs. Has me interested in making my own pedals lol. And I don't know the first thing about electronics!

More like the model cars. I have sold a few, but mostly pedals of my own design like blenders, and board routing tools (looper, booster, A/B combo)

I like making them though, so sometimes I'll sell one off and make another exactly like it just for something to do.

You'll probably eventually want to try rolling your own from schematics (it's addictive) but for starters Invalid Link Removed and Build Your Own Clone sell excellent kits to get started on.
If you're completely new to electronics / soldering / etc. I would suggest practicing a bit. BYOC gives you a free "confidence boost" kit to try before you take on a real build.

I've done that with good results. The paint has definitely been the most challenging part.

Nice JR. I always liked you design skills. The LED = Ball of Yarn with the Cat is clever.

A blender is actually exactly what I am looking to maybe build. It seems like there aren't many choices out there and they seem way overpriced for what a blender does. I haven't been able to find any Blender kits or schematics yet though. Is the blender a hard design to build? Costly? Any chance you would like to share the schematics with me?

It was actually your "chocolate" milkshake blender I saw in the ads that got me so interested. Though I would like to build one in a traditional stomp box style.

On the blender topic. I just completed a schematic design of a blender and more, Paries Blooper as I call it. A series/parallel blender looper. 3 channels or loops plus a clean channel. Each channel will have a bypass and level control. One of the most functional things will be a configuration switch. Which will allow 16 different series/parallel configurations of the channels i.e ch1 in series to ch2, which is in parallel to ch3 and clean, and all the combinations of the 3 channels and clean, all series, all parallel , series parallel etc. etc. I hope to prototype this soon, when I have time available. When I do prototype, I'll be sure to post......Lapicide

The knob/switch placement has made this one a bit tricky
 
I know this thread is about the visual part of DIY pedals - what I really crave is the diagram for the VT bass pedal - i would sooo want to build myself one of these with a DI in it too.

I've tried to change the thread title to reflect the visual aspect of pedal building, but to no avail.

I think it's great to build and mod pedals to taste, but I definitely don't advocate copying designs that are currently in production. So I hope not to see any schematics like that in here.

If all you want is an added Low Z output you might think about throwing a DI box right after your VT and you've solved your problem.

I threw this together for my old build just for practice with picture editing and printing with decal paper and stuff. I used GIMP, which is free.
Hopefully I'll get decal paper later this week.

I'm not sure yet whether I want to bother with the whole clear finish thing.
But, just wondering, could I paint the whole aluminum chassis black, then do the decal over it all? Or is the decal semi transparent, so lighter parts would show threw to the black?
