Double Bass Do I need a preamp or filter with a Realist?

Im new to double bass. I have the Realist intalled. In a search on TB I have seen a lot discussion about impedance and some discussion on various filters. None of which I understand! I have several amp and speakers from playing electric bass. I most commonly use a MarkBass 112 combo. Also have a Streamliner 600 and Carvin going through an Epifani UL 212. I also have a preamp/DI.

Should I be using the preamp rather then directly plugging into the anps?

Filters? Really have no electrical or engineering background so simply put.. do I need one?

I use a Realist Copperhead (on cello) through a MarkBass 121P and it is a much better rig for me with a preamp. I believe other TB'ers have written that they do fine without one. I used a simple preamp at first (forgot the brand) and that worked fine but moved to a Fishman preamp w/EQ.
 
I have a new student this year who has a Realist on his bass and the signal is super hot, so much so that it distorts the input section of most amps. On my PJB combo, you can turn down the input gain almost all the way and it will sound OK, but not all amps have that feature. Has anyone else experienced this?

Mine was like that just before it died.

Back when I was using a Realist I plugged directly into either of my Walter Woods amps or the GK 200MB the tone was fine as long as the volume was moderate. If I had to play at higher volume the dreaded “piezo quack” would rear it’s ugly beak and the low end boom would start up. EQ could tame the boom.

A high output signal from a piezo could be reduced in level by a capacitor connected in series (open up the hot wire and put the capacitor in between).
This is built into the Full Circle underlength jack adapter, but I have sold my Full Circle for the Yamahiko, so I cannot measure the value.
@fdeck might help you here, I learned that from one of his postings.

But back to the question why it is so loud. The piezos generate voltage due to pressure and bending/deformation. The ceramic is more sensitive in one field than the other depending on in which direction the ceramic is cut.
I’m not sure what works better in a bridge foot pickup. The deformation variance because of the side movement of the bridge or the pressure variance because of the downward pressure on the pickup from bridge foot.
But I think it is more the deformation that is also the typical application in thin piezoelectric elements.
So for some reason there might be a higher deformation if the top under the bridge foot (or the pickup slips with vibration, rather unlikely). Or the bridge foot is not well shaped and might cause a higher deformation with vibration than an equally distributed pressure on the pickup.
Or, as someone else mentioned, it might be dying...

Had that when I first got mine...

I still run mine, works fine without a Pre, but I paired mine with the k&k rockabilly preamp and clicky neck pickup. Sounds great.

That is the inherent design problem with the Realist. To get the best signal from the Realist, it has to be placed rignt in the path of the vibrations between the foot of the bridge and the table, to which the

bass bar is connected (glued) By placing it there, it slightly interupts the vibrations of the table that are transferred along the bass bar. It's the pervue of a good luthier or inveterant tinkerer to get that pickup

mounted properly. I really believe that the Realist Wood, Aptflex (no longer avaliable), and Shadow pickukp element are better because their not quite as difficult to position. Just my take
 
When I played a Realist over the course of ten years, 1 Meg Ohm with a Walter Woods Amplifier, Headway EDB-2 worked just fine. I never needed 10 Meg. Acoustic Image Amplifiers are set at 1 Meg Ohm.

I can hear a difference between the 1 and 5 Megohm setting on the EDB-2 but at 10 Meg the Realist looses some of it's edge definition. Just my take however.

If you wanted to try 10 Meg get one of FDecks HPF Buffer Preamps, their inexpensive,
have a High Pass Filter and Phase Reverse Switch. The HPF can help to smoothe out some of the Realists tonal problems at higher volume.

Hmm, first this regards the Realist, not the Lifeline. Different PU. Second... the simple answer was that a pre amp wasn't necessary. But I'm using the Broughton HPF-DI, which makes a big difference in tone and sound. Beyond this, to include an opinion on that preamp, I have no clue. Others will need to weigh in.
Can you share or link me to what you found or ended up going with? I' told I need a preamp to run the realist lifeline, but I have not idea what to look for. I found this for sale, but is it a good one? Presonus TubePre v2 Tube Preamplifier DI Box
