Do I REALLY need a new p?

Short answer: Yes.
I have 5 effing Precisions and I constantly think of 'just one more'.
I am a highly addictive personality type.
I beleive in a backup for the backup.
Good luck with your new Precision (afterthought)!

Yes, two P basses is good thinking! Here are some options!
- two split coil P basses; one with flats, one with rounds
- a split coil P bass and a single coil P bass
- a reg. split coil P bass and a PJ
- two split coil P basses; one to play on weekends at parties and one to play on working days, at gigs
- two split coil P basses, one to keep in pristine shape and one to beat the tar out of
- two split coil P basses; because every single one is different!! Look at how many Strats Eric Clapton owns!

If you are a player who giggs....

I'm going to go against the trend and conventional TB (variety versatility blah blah blah) mind set, and say yes get a second split coil and set it up just like your main bass.

Same pickup. Same brand and gauge of strings, same action etc.

Having a backup that sounds and plays just like your main bass is very valuable IMO.

Having a third (backup for your backup) isn't a bad idea either if your no.1 has to be out for repairs for any reason.

Regarding the single coil P-basses... different animal.
They don't sound like a split coil. They sound IMO more like a VERY percussive J bass w/ the neck pickup solo'd with a very quick and sharp attack on the note. Very wide spectum of sound from lows to high. These don't have the low mid bark that split coils have, and favor the high mid (more like a J). Great basses, but they don't really sound like split coil P's. (yes I own both versions)

I do have 2 Fender Precisions with the same setup and the same DiMarzio-PUs. They work the best live. I even got 2 G&L L-2000s because I played them live in another band. But it seems I'm returning to my P-Bass in that band, too.

I've got a third Fender P-Bass with the original Fender PU, which I plan to use in a few „acoustic gigs” (yeah, I know, but I don't like acoustic bass guitars).

Well, my first Bass was a Precision and I tried hard to get away from it, but it just works best for me.

I think it's always good to have a backup everything. Get a set of strings for now, and shop around before you buy. Many basses to choose from. I like the P-Bass sound, but prefer the jazz bass neck, so my next bass is going to be custom.

I ask myself if I NEED a "P" all the time. I am an active 5 string guy, but sometimes I think I "should" have a P like everyone else. Haven't really liked one until I played a Road Worn the other day. Man, that sounded sweet. Played nice - for a P - that wide string spacing gets me.

I could answer "yes" to the question, but I don't even have one P right now. :rollno:

I do see the immense value in having a backup that is dern close to my main bass. Since a J bass fits most of what I do, that's what I have. (The custom that I'm getting will be able to cop a p-ish tone, but not the full monty.) I also see the value in versatility. So I may end up switching the J as backup for a P5.

I will be getting a P bass very soon. I played a Fender Jazz Special (MIJ E series) for years.

This is what I come back to all the time in my "what should I have - if anything - for a 2nd/backup bass" debate with myself. Actually, I think I'd rather have another BB605.
