Do I Really Need To Spend $2K?

Please consider Ampeg for your stack. You should get a 210 and 115 instead of 2 112's, you can still split them up for practicing, but you'll get a way better spectrum when you combine them live. Now the SVT Classic (everyone should have one) weighs a ton, so I would go with the SVT-450H. It's lightweight and sounds good. I say this all because it looks cool. Don't forget how important that is! Best of luck.

I've been reading the shootouts between the LMII and the Shuttle 6. I haven't tried the Shuttle yet, but it seems to be around the same price point.

OK, so get a 6.0, and one NICE cab, either a 2x10, or a 2x12 or whatever. I'd leave the NICE cab wherever is easier for the gig transport situation. If the gear gets packed up into a trailer at the drummer's place, then the nice cab lives there. If you bring your own stuff, then the nice cab lives at your house. Whatever... then grab something like a PV 2x10 on ebay for $150, and use that as the practice/beater cab. Done....

I've learned quite a bit today and appeciate everyone quick replies and suggestions. I could keep a head and one cab for rehearsals and gigs at my drummer's and just use my Peavey Basic 112 for home use. But I get the sense that everyone eventually get's more than one cab, dictated by the size the the venue. If that's going to be inevitable, I might as well do do the two cab thing now.

Pending another visit to Club Bass who carries MB, Berg, and Ashdown, I'm looking at the following combinations at the following price points:

1) LMII with 2 Berg AE112's - $1967 +taxes.

2) LMII with 2 Avatar SB112 Neo's - $1367 + taxes + shipping

3) Ashdown Little Giant LG350/1000 with 2 Avatar SB112 Neo's - $1180 + taxes + shipping.

In all three instances, I get the setup I want. I could sub the LMII for the Shuttle 6.0, but I'll have to try the Shuttle first. I'll have to try the Ashdown as well, but the price is right. I've sent an email to Steamco Music to get info on the shipping charges and applicable taxes for the Avatars. I'm not sure if I'll have to pay Provincial sales tax.

That's Funny! Assuming you were serious......

I can see it now you leave an audition "Man that guy really sucked, he's going to need some serious helping carrying around that heavy gear, which sounds aweful. But man he looked COOL!"

I'm kidding but those priorities seem slightly off topic.....

I played in blues bands for years using a hartke 3500 in a 2 space rack and a 2x10 loaded with carvin speakers. It all fit in the back of my crx. We played all sorts of gigs and I never had a problem being heard, or hearing myself. I had around $5/600 into that rig (still have them btw and they work flawlessly after 100's of gigs)
I picked up another hartke 3500 2x10 combo off craiglist for $300 last summer. I've used it several times at shows and it worked well. It fits perfect in the back of my honda hatchback. I use a foldable handtruck to haul it in and out of venues, same with the above rig. You can find them at garage sales for $1 or so.

If you are considering the Berg AE112s as you said in the OP, all cabinets are not equal and cheaper doesn't neccesarily mean just as good for less money.

Do your homework on some of the other suggestions to make sure they meet your tonal preferences. I am not going to criticize any particular brands mentioned but some are less expensive for very apparent reasons..

And make sure you reread the "ampeg guys" post it is even funnier the 2nd and 3rd time around, a better spectrum always looks cool!...

GK 700rb-II is also good, and lightweight concerning old-style amp design, 16lbs, so that's not so bad. --Kent

I am pretty sure the OP stated that he didn't want to buy used but more importantly what is a "corksniffer rig"?

"Corksniffer" implies a connoisseur, like the guys that sniff the corks of the fine wines...
It just means a top quality rig...

As far as buying used, well, if you have the funds for new that's fine but we aren't all gifted with cash. Personally, I've run into a lot of excellent used gear that I would never have afforded new; and, if a piece of used gear doesn't quite suit you long term there's less resale loss.

Not to knock the Bergs - I have two HT112's - but it seems like overkill for a new gig.
Also, is small size that critical an aspect?

Sure. I look to see what comes up all the time. However, being new at buying bass amps, most of what's posted doesn't mean too much to me. I feel more comfortable having recourse through a retail store at the moment.

If you really want the Bergs, then I think you should go with those. I've gone with cheaper equipment before in lieu of what I really wanted, and I was never satisfied. That's not to say that cheaper is not always better - But I've learned that when you cut costs and don't get exactly what you want, you end up not being totally satisfied in the long run.

Well, making mistakes is the surest and quickest way to learn! :)

I think money spent on Avatar is money very well spent. They're inexpensive and sound awesome.

I hear what you're saying and I totally agree. I do believe in most instances that you get what you pay for. Once in a while, something comes along that defies the statement. My SX basses are a perfect example of that. I have to say that I was very impressed with Club Bass and Jeff Freemen, the owner. Most of the stores that I've gone into have sales people that don't have a clue what's going on.

I told him what I was looking for and and that I needed to get a handle on pricing. LMII and Bergs is what he suggested and what I tried. I also respect the opinions of all the players here, and so far there are allot of good things that have been said about the Avatars. Unfortunately, there's no immediate chance of trying them out locally. There a huge difference in price between the Bergs and the Avatars, so are the Bergs really worth that much more. That's the big question in my mind right now.

I know the die hard Avatar guys will disagree with me but I think both of these brands engineering and sound is reflective of the price.
