If you're at all serious about gigging, you need at least two in case of mechanical failure. I watched a touring punk/indie rock band that had to interrupt their show because the bass player's rickenbacker was being temperamental and cutting in and out.(probably a bad output jack) The dude threw a fit and tossed the bass on the ground, and had to borrow the other band's bass.
There was already a lot of tension at that show since there were two headliners splitting the door and there was NOBODY at the show. Maybe 30 people at $10 a head...
