Do you ever feel uninspired?

I stopped for about a year around 2002. I guess I was burned out after playing a lot. Anyway, I didn't play much during that time, but I kept processing bass lines in my head (evidently couldn't stop that). When I actually WANTED to play again I had a lot of new ideas. it was a blast!

There are times when I'm in a rut. A few days away from the bass is OK. I do a lot of freelance playing. So being in different musical environments help keep it fresh.
My mind set is every time I strap on the bass. Be in the moment and enjoy.
It beats working at Walmart.

Me, uninspired? Nope, never. I compose six songs every day, seven on weekends, and complete an oil painting each Tuesday. I write a sonnet before each meal and a haiku every time I take a poopie. While surfing the internet, I am mentally blocking scenes for my next hit movie. I've stopped accepting awards because there's no more space in the garage for all the plaques and trophies. The muse was visiting me so often that I had to kick her out - she had emptied my liquor cabinet. When I walk down the street, buskers run after me, emptying their hats and instrument cases into my pockets. The Library of Congress has me on speed-dial. My dreams have been serialized and my passing fancies are in pre-production. I recently sold the foreign rights to my laundry lists. Last week I wrote, performed and recorded a rock-opera based on the imaginary inner dialogue of a mosquito. The last time I was bored, Reagan was president. My name is on the best-seller lists in 15 countries. I can curse in 28 different languages, sight read for 42 instruments, and I'm also a tightrope walker in my spare time. I build all my instruments from raw materials and design all my own stage costumes. Every time I fart, Chanel comes out with a new brand of perfume. Uninspired? Nope. Not me.

Sure it's normal to feel uninspired. It just means that now is NOT the time to quit, you're going though a "growth period". I often imagine what it will be like to play my last gig or whatever. It will just be time and I'll be grateful for all the highs and lows, the BS and the cool stuff. It will feel right. I hope.

I often feel uninspired. Everything is poopie, everything is predictable, no-one understands what I want from music and we're all doomed anyway. But on the bright side, I get to studio jam regularly with some really talented musicians and have a lot of fun playing just for the sake of playing stuff no-one will ever hear :)

I became uninspired and stopped playing bass for 20 years. One night my wife suggested we take an art class together. I told her I am incapable of drawing a straight line much less art, but if she wants to do it go ahead and I might pick up my bass again. That was 7 years and two fairly successful cover bands ago. Now I find myself uninspired again. As with the first time it is triggered by a bad experience with other musicians that makes me question why I'm putting myself through all this. I think this time I may just stop and see if the urge to play once again overtakes me. I hope it does.
