Just like anything else in this life. Anybody can be fired, and anybody can be replaced.
I do worry about people suddenly quitting, which has happened a few times in the past.
If they did get a "new guy", he would have to bring a lot to the table. Make yourself irreplaceable and that won't happen.

I was 'fired' once - and it happened when I was about 16 and I handled it pretty well. I was disappointed, but I totally understood why it happened and the reasons weren't so much that I couldn't play the parts and were more about image (I like to tell myself), but still...
But that one event made me focus on the total package and recognize that there is more to being valuable than just being musically competent. My personal MO is to know my parts, always be professional (on time/early, pitch in on many levels, stay late, do other duties like artwork/web stuff, etc...). I treat every gig as if it were an audition for bigger, better gigs down the road and the idea that if someone contacted a previous band, the review I'd get would be "you won't be sorry if you hire him".
While I may not be the best bass player around, I am an excellent band member!
I live in the world of causal gigs, one-nighters, etc. There are two "fears" with this type of work, but you are not necessarily "fired" in either case.
1. The phone stops ringing (somebody didn't like your playing last time, or there's a new player in town, etc.)
2. When the phone rings, you turn the gig down because of another commitment. You do this a few times to the same person, and then, the phone stops ringing...
I 'fear' getting fired for stuff I didn't say or do, just because people like to talk about each other. Lies become truth and I don't care, so I never argue my side.
Nope. I know what I bring to the table, and so do the people I play with.

Sometimes it's just too much work to be irreplaceable. There's been times I'd rather have been fired than having to deal with lugging the PA, promoting the band, booking gigs, etc.
