Do you Genz-Benz shuttle users get hiss from Signal Shape Buttons?

Guys:

First of all, thanks for all the comments. Glad to hear almost all of you don't notice this issue.

The setup I generally use with the Shuttle 3.0 is is pretty simple. I run a Fender Jazz passive bass (upgraded with Lindy Fralin noise canceling pickups) directly into the amp. No effects. The amp drives a Genz-Benz 10T cab which does have a tweeter. No tweeter level control.

But the hiss is not related to the guitar. I hear the exact same thing when I unplug the bass. Hiss from the "mid-scoop" and "H.F. Attack" signal shape buttons.

For grins I ran the shuttle through a Epifani UL2 12" cab I have. This does have a tweeter level control and I cranked it all the way down. Less pronounced hiss but still there.

The noise is not really that noticeable in playing situations. But it bugs me just a little so I simply don't use those two buttons. Even without them I'm still happy with the Shuttle 3.0 -- overall it is a great little amp.

No tweeter attenuator is probably the issue... a hot tweeter, especially a cheaper piezo (not sure if that is what is in there), and significant treble boost can easily result in what you are hearing.

No hiss w/my ShuttleMAX12. None with a 6.0 I used to own.

Tweeters are a common source of hiss.

Tweeters are never a source of hiss. However, they will reproduce upper treble 'issues' with certain amps, basses and effects. If your cab is not capable of extending into the upper treble, of course, you won't hear any upper treble hiss, even if it is there:smug: Of course, you won't hear any upper treble either, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your tone goals.

Correct, and this is why tweeter attenuation is so important to most users... to balance the amount of high end needed to achieve your tone without being overbearing or exaggerating stuff that you don't want.

I have this same problem with my new 3.0.

Noticeable hiss when the mid-scoop button is engaged. Playing on stage, it doesn't really matter much. But in studio, mic'ing the amp it is very noticeable.

The hiss is present with or without the bass plugged in. the treble on the head is at around 10 o'clock. When the mid-scoop button is not pressed, the amp is dead silent.

I have noticed the mid scoop adding hiss when engaged on several shuttles through headphones via the POST DI and through a cab with varying amounts of tweeter.

When the band kicks in its no biggie. But if I were recording, I'd likely try to achieve a similar effect using the shuttle's awesome tone shaping knobs. I doubt it will be identical (although aged horse can correct me) to the mid-scoop button, but I think you can get close by sweeping the mid freq and cutting some mids.

I will say the Shuttle 6.0 is the best amp I have ever played or heard. The DI, weight, tone control and feature set leaves nothing to be desired imho. I love carrying this in my backpack to gigs and telling people, "yeah, that's 600W right there". Forget lifting a 60lb Crest poweramp :)

Oh, and the customer service at Genz Benz is phenomenal. They treated me right and I will stick with their products for the forseeable future because of it. (I had a very bad customer service experience with SWR in the 90s and will NEVER use their stuff again)

The mid scoop filter is a different topology so no, the results will not be identical. You might be able to get close enough if you try though.

Where the noise floor increase is most notable is with noisy active pickups. The reason is that gain and phase manipulation is used to generate the cut and the gain applied to high frequency noise gets amplified along with the signal that is passed, even though there is a band cut. It's one of the natural results of this type of filter, and the noise is really very small. With a quiet pickup, the noise floor raises maybe 1/2 to 1dB or so, not a problem for a live amp and generally not even an issue for recording.

I just picked up a new shuttle 3.0 / 10T combo. First thing I noticed after taking it out of the box and trying all the buttons is the significant hiss when the HF attack button is on. I would call it a loud hiss. The mid scoop button also produces hiss but less than the HF button. This is with all the control knobs at 12 o'clock. Lowering the master section volume to 9 o'clock makes the hiss more tolerable. Hiss is the same whether a bass is plugged in or not.

Luckily I'm not likely to use the HF attack setting but I'm wondering if this amp is within specs. Found the online manual but no noise specs are listed.

Is the 6.0 amp quieter than the 3.0? The people with the 6.0 don't report any hiss. I also demoed the 6.0 in the shop and didn't notice any hiss there.

Besides that the amp sounds great and quiet in the other settings.

I just bought a Shuttle 9.0 from Musicians Friend. In my basement I noticed an intermittent hiss, almost a sizzle and a crackle when running through my Aguilar 112 cab. This amp is literally brand new out of the box. This was at low volume; preamp knobs set at 12 o'clock and the master set at about 9 o'clock. Granted, I was sitting right in front of the speaker, but the sound (crackle) was intermittent and was happening with nothing plugged in to the amp input, as well as when I was plugged in.

Could this be caused by a brand new preamp tube breaking in?

I A/B'd the speaker and cable through the same power source with my Acoustic Image Clarus Series 1 and heard no excess noise from the speaker or cables.

I am going to check my GB 9.0 out a little more...Hopefully this goes away.

:hmm: I was just checking out the GB 9.0 with my upright in my basement and the hissing (with occasional crackle and sizzle) was not apparent. Then I put the amp on standby so I could dig in and practice without waking my family, and 10 minutes later, lo and behold, the crackle comes back for about 5 seconds and then fades away. I turned the standby off and didn't hear any more, shut the amp down and came up to post here again.

This intermittant crap drives me crazy with electronics...at first I thought it was my active electronics in my Yamaha TRB 5, but it did it with my passive Yamaha BBN 5 as well....

Has anyone else had this problem with a brand new GB Shuttle? Arrived via UPS about 10 hours ago....

Thanks,
John

Did you try a different cable?

Post a topic and GB will get back to you asap. I had a guitar Orange Dual Terror making those types of noises and although its all tube and totally different, it was just a bad tube. Got sent a free tube from Orange.

I just bought a GB Shuttle 9.0. I tried it out -- and found it to be incredibly quiet. The fan is nearly silent (I have not pushed it hard in a gig yet). The hiss I notice in the signal shape buttons on my Shuttle 3.0 is not there at all on the Shuttle 9.0. Not sure why but there you have it. The signal shape buttons do work.

I'm thinking this Shuttle 9.0 is one great amp.

I have this same problem with my new 3.0.

I just got a 3.0-8T and can confirm the exact same thing. The unit sounds so good, I can live with this "feature" :-)

I'm glad I found this thread to confirm that my unit is not defective.

I was planning to post the same question.

My new Shuttle 3.0-10T has a noticeable hiss when any of the Signal Shape (L.F. Boost, Mid Scoop, or HF Attack) buttons are pressed, even when the amp is MUTED.

I'm wondering if I should return it to GB for warranty work.

It seems normal for the hiss to be there even when muted and no bass plugged in for the mid-scoop and HF boost... but NOT normal for it to happen with just the LF boost on.

As someone else mentioned, with just the LF boost on, it is dead quiet.

Dunno how old your amp is or how many hours are on it, but it could be the tube.
I had some issues with mine and replaced the tube.
Still had the same thing, would make some noise sorta like you described.

Contacted GB, and they said send it back. Problem was, it's my only amp right and I had a TON of gigs. And the noise wasn't getting to FOH.

On a whim I replaced the tube a SECOND time.
Problem solved.

Just for giggles I'd give that a shot.
