Do you let other people play your basses?

I answered yes, however I should have amended that to depends on who they are. I don't let some Joe Blow off the street play my gear, but friends and known persons, absolutely. I have been pretty lucky when it comes to gear and my ability to obtain nice stuff. I figure, how else are some of these people going to know what they like or are missing out on, if they don't play some? No harm. No foul.
These days I've only got one out on loan I haven't seen in a few years, unless you count the two my brother has.
Gave a friend my mustang on permanent loan. Never expect to see it again. My nephew has one of my basses and the kid down the road has played my basses and guitars. If I was a "pro" I might see things differently.
Only time I lent my bass to friends that reharsed, i got it back with a dent in a fret.

And they denied it was them.
I had to replanify the whole neck.
So I am vaccinated for that.
Only time it can happen now is if I am at most 2 meters away and always can have an eye on the instrument.
Last time I was tricked into doing a jam after the show, and a guy started to play with the fretting hand over the neck, and the bass dangerously close to hitting the keyboard, be cause stage was so small.
I went on stage and pulled the neck up while he was doing that non sense.
This bars that wants to do jams should by their own gear, like a fender bullet for 100€ and that's it.

Only 5 people in my 47+ years of playing...my 2 sons (both bassists), my guitarist of 25 years (when I switch to keys), 2 of my bass playing close friends. Other than that.....NO!

I do not lend my basses except for one. I politely tell them that I had multiple bad experiences lending my instruments before, and am not doing that anymore (which is a true story).
It's a tool. I have to be ready to use it in an hour's notice. If their chemistry is such that they kill my strings then I'm not of any service to the audience, other players, venue, or studio. The string change just adds to the complications. I may not want brand new strings on for upcoming sessions or gigs. In an emergency absolutely! So some guy can fantasize about being a rock star not so much.
I once knew some people. We used to live together and share everything in college days. Years later they called and asked to borrow our vacuum cleaner. I said they are for sale at local stores.
Weeks later they called and asked could they borrow our car. I asked where were there other three cars. They replied that they were broken down.
Owning something and being responsible for it has it's side effects. It's available for other people in an emergency and it's well maintained to take care of anyone. If sharing is a virtue and we own everything in kind how is it generous for me to share?
