Do you Prefer a Stack, or Combo?

Just wondering what everyone prefers, and why?

I'm looking to get a G-K 1001RB-II head and most likely the NEO 212 to go along with it.

However, I see that G-K also offers a combo of this package.

The benefits of the combo I can see are that it has the handle, and wheels for help with portability. However, the downside is that it's a larger package, and weighs more as one unit (only really a problem getting it in and out of a vehicle - but my vehicle is a Jeep Wrangler that's lifted 4+ inches). Also, the combo unit offers a little protection with the head as it wouldn't fall off the cabinet accidentally.

The benefits of the stack (head and cab) are that if I don't like one component (or both) I can sell it individually from the other. It might be easier to get in and out of the vehicle. Also, if I decide to add a cab (like a 1X15), I'd be able to mix and match rather than have to always lug the 2x12 around as it's built into the head.

From a price standpoint, I think the Combo is priced just slightly less ($100) than the head and cabinet combined.

What do you prefer, and why? Just wonering if I'm missing something major on either side of the coin?

Combos on their own don't often cut it in a live situation with a full blown band although there are a few that do.
Most decent combos allow a second cab to be added, therefor, by doing so, as and when needed, you have, for all intents and purposes a stack.

A 1001 and Neo 212 is my main gigging rig, and it really will cut it by itself. (Well, more than enough for me, are you (OP) ear-bleeding loud?)

If its not an issue, might as well get them seperate. You can wheel the head around on top of the combo anyway. So the only downside is that $100.

More flexible - you can swap either head or cab

I like combos, personally. Everything's just simpler.

However, if the amp freaks out on you, like mine did, then you're screwed.

Simpler is better. If the combo offers an extension to another cab, you're golden.
But at the same time, if you're considering GK cabs, might as well consider Avatar cabs too. Their version of the Neo 212 is like 56 lbs or something insane like that. Less $ too .

Combo for convenience. I don't really need more than one basic tone quality for the styles that I play. But I have been using a bass head while I attempt to design the ultimate DIY speaker.

Don't forget the third possibility, preamp and powered speaker.

I've learned that combos don't work for me and my band setting. So I'll be getting a stack once I come up with the money. A GK 700 head, GK 1x15 and a GK 4x10.

I think the ironic answer is: Use a combo when it is more convenient, and use a stack when it is more convenient.

stack's to me are more versatile. i can switch in and out heads and cabs and although it might be a little heavier, i can take them in 2 trips.

The issue I have with combos is the lack of horsepower.

Although a tad on the heavy side, this one just might work.

Yes. I like a combo and stack.

I have the Eden Metro and a D210XST. I put them together to play med sized room. I will be adding the D212XLT to complete the rig.

I dig combo amps because they're usually small and portable. However, I've been looking for something a little more powerful.

I think I found the answer in Eden. There's an Eden CXC110 combo that looks really good to me. You can add extension cabinets OR you could remove the head from the enclosure all together and use it with the cab of your choice.

You get the best of both worlds. Nothin' like having your cake and eating it too.

Remember: Combo doesn't = cheap.
