I have a bunch of pedals and preamps and stuff that will never be used outside the house, but I often use the VT bass DI, MXR M80, or similar stuff, I like the idea to have the preamp, overdrive, and DI in case of need.
sometimes it just sits on top of the amp as I do not really need it off, for some bands.

Night Owl Industries Oscar and/or Edison tube preamps, on every note :bassist:

Xotic RC Booster with my passive basses, it is turned off when switching to an active one.
I was nearly about to swallow my contempt for Comic Sans and get one of those when I discovered my Night Owl Industries stuff and ended up on a very different path, haha. The Xotic stuff comes highly recommended.

Yes, off and on.
The first one I had was a BBE Stinger, which was just a little Bass\Treble "sonic maximizer" It worked will for my junk Kramer bass and Fender Sidekick 65 amp. Then I used a Boss GEB-7 EQ for a while. I had a Aguilar Tone Hammer for a year or two, but didn't get what I wanted out of it. After going for a few years with just drive pedals, I recently picked up a Darkglass B7K Ultra. I personally see it as a drive pedal, but I guess it counts as a preamp pedal since it has an EQ and a DI out. I'm digging it so far.

I use a preamp/modeling/multi-fx pedal
as my always-on preamp, directly driving a power amp. I needed to get a bass rig together and had almost no budget, and initially it was just a quick and easy way to get all the basic building blocks I wanted (tuner, compressor, tone shaping and line level output) in one fell swoop for $50 (used older Zoom B2 on local CL).

Already had the power amp.

It’s not as easy to carry as a little class D head would be, but it does the job and since I only use one sound it’s pretty easy to make minor adjustments to level or EQ as needed. Since I don’t switch it in or out as I play, it lives on top of
my rack case so I guess for me it’s no longer a pedal.

The more I use it and get consistent results, the less I bitch about my (possibly irrational) misgivings about digital emulations being part of my sound...and the more I appreciate how many “sonic hats” the little thing manages to “wear.”
