Does heavy guage strings = fatter tone?

I wouldn't say that heavier strings are fatter. But I have noticed that lighter strings tend to be brighter and have more snap. Regardless, I think the most important thing when deciding on string gauges is the way they feel. I prefer a tighter string myself.
