Hard to go wrong with a P-Bass... (I will include the many, many p-bass imitators out there - many arguably better quality than Fender)

Show up with a P-Bass and it says I am here to lay down the low end and fit into the context of the band and the song -- no matter what the situation or band.

If you show up with some crazy 6 string monster it says something different.

I remember coming across Robinson's myspave once when they were looking for a bassist. One of their requirements was to "not have ****** gear (Peavey, etc.)".

I've been ripped on for playing a five string, a six string, and in F#. I was told six string basses don't exist. I've never been canned though.

Any band who is going to make their decision based on who made the wood and steel I have hanging around my neck rather than how well what I do fits the project (lookalike tribute bands excepted) is not a band I would want to join anyway. That said, I hate the look of that "creature of the id" Ritter bass that Phil Lesh is playing these days. :D

"In my opinion, yes. A bass is a tool for making music. You can use a $2 hammer to drive a nail, or a $50 fine tuned to your grip etc hammer. You can drive the nail either way. But its all about how you do it."

ha ha you can drive the nail but using the fancy one is way better for your hands in the long run.

Still gets the job done ultimately.

And yes, i see your point of view there. I use huge ancient heavy Tube amps, and 13 pound basses. And i'm even young.

Speaking as someone who has played on both sides of the Atlantic I can say this attitude is far more prevalent in America then in Britain. Whether its a cultural thing or not I really couldn't say but I can confirm that its mostly limited to the 30+ crowd (I'm 40 myself) All any British Band I played with cared about was whether or not I could play. I never encountered gear snobbery until I came over here 13 years ago. I think people get an idea in their head of their "Dream band" and tend to exclude you if you don't fit into their little fantasy. Sad but true.
