Does your significant other have a hobby?

Haha, three pages in I make the OP that originally intend. I don't like making long posts on my phone because they seem to have typos galore.

Anyway, I asked mainly because on this board and in real life I've seen that there always seems to be a breakdown in communication between those who have hobbies of some kind and those who don't. Even if their not your significant other (like me and my parents or friends) it can be kind of strange to deal with. Most of the time it's over money and how they can't imagine spending the amount of money that we do on the things we may enjoy and whenever it comes up I pretty much repeat "You won't get it." lol. Of course, there are other things considered too like time spent on that particular interest and I usually use the same response.

I realize that this question has a heavy bias towards those who are in relationships with people who do have hobbies so they'll probably be the one's answering the most but I thought it would be an interesting topic :).

One more question: Do you think that having/not having a hobby has a significant effect on your relationship or no?

My girlfriend is also a musician, she mainly plays orchestral percussion (focus on timpani and marimba).

Oddly, even though we share a passion for music we never discuss music or play together. Unless we get into an argument over Bach vs Beethoven, which actually gets pretty heated. :D

I don't understand how someone can live life without being interested in anything enough to turn it into a hobby. My problem is that I have too many interests. Even though my fiancee is a very accomplished musician, we have never really played together, the one time we did we turned 7 Nation Army into a sweet jazz song. I mix for her band all the time.

I know, I was thinking the same thing. I'm reading this thread, completely baffled that people out there have ZERO hobbies. All you need is to think about or be interested in anything in the entire world and a hobby just kind of develops naturally. How could you possibly be so passive?

All of my past girlfriends have been involved in creativity and the arts. I wouldn't date someone who wasn't. I don't think I'd be able to so much as hold a conversation with someone who has no activity at all.

He is the bassist in our original rock band and we talk a lot about it and music in general. He also subs for a couple of other bands and is a member of another original rock band. In addition, he loves online poker and other internet games and is currently spending a lot of time researching his next GAS purchase, which will be considerable when it all comes together. I couldn't imagine being involved with someone who didn't have their own interests and passions in life.

Previous ex: Facebook and choir, and because it was music that "used what God gave her," she could never understand why I would spend money on my hobbies.

Newest ladyfriend: Digital cameras, photography, and photoshop. I can't wait for her to get some sweet gig pics.

I don't know about communication breakdowns further than just the generic, "I don't know why you spend so much time/effort/money on that."

I think that they certainly affect the relationship. My music can be a safety valve, as can her photography. It provides interesting day-to-day moments and I'm sure it's helping us keep from smothering each other.
