Double Application PA system questions

I was reading this thread:

I want a simple PA system that will serve two functions: Provide enough power to function as a main band P.A. for at least vocals and kick, with room for bass and guitar if necesarry. No more than 500 people.

The second function is for providing music in DJ application. Of course, many newer songs rely on deep bass which takes alot of power to produce.

So will 2 K10's/K12's plus a K Sub provide what I'm looking for? Or should I look for a system with seperate components? Ideally, I'm looking for something under $2000.

Any suggestions?

The QSC K Series speakers would be perfect for double duty applications. QSC does advertise 1000 watts per box however I am not exactly sure on the accuracy of those ratings. I highly doubt that a pair of k10's or even k12's and a K-sub would be sufficient for up to 500 people though.

My band uses 4-QSC hpr subs and 4 JBL prx 535s for a PA and we could barely cover 500 people. For $2000.00 you might be able to get enough gear for a crowd of 100-150.

500 is a HUGE bar crowd, and although that system is a fine product, it is not nearly enough for 500.

Just the yelling and shuffling around of 500 people is super loud and requires a much bigger PA system to overcome.

Are the crowds truly going to be that big or are you hoping to cover that size crowd if necessary?

Especially if you want to DJ and get the heavy bass out there.

500 is the absolute limit, in which case most people will be socializing and talking since it would be a sponsored event. But for gigs where bands are the main focus or when I will be providing music for a party, 100-150 is more than enough.

For $800, I can buy 2 powered tops from Carvin from their LM line. For another $1100, I can also get 2 powered subs from their LS line. For now, I would use the simple mackie mixer since our band has our own mixer. The mackie would be for my own DJ applications.

That system would work for maybe 200 people with a rock band. EDIT- Your mixer is really limited. It might work for a Dj gig but is not really practical for a band situation. If you are going with Carvin you might want to check out the cs1644 mixers. I use to own one and for the money it was a good deal.

As far as the mixer goes, that would be only for DJ gigs. My band has an old 12 channel mackie(?) mixer. I figure that for when it's just me, all I need is two or three inputs total.

What about the speaker system itself? Yes? No? better alternative?

For 100-150 the K series PA or the carvins would be good, but covering 500 is probably not going to happen. You need an exponentially larger system to cover that many people.

Interesting..I'm sort of in the same boat..in reverse. I have a decent PA system(I think so) and added my bass to he mix. I play my bass thru a Peavey xr8600(1200 watts) and one Peavey PV118 in the house for practice. I have the option of using my Peavey cs800s(1200 bridgeable watts) to power the single sub. I plan on adding one more sub to the mix.

The PA system I use is used mostly outdoors. I have 6 Peavey PR15's. A Peavey XR8600 and a Peavey CS800s. I have 2,400 watts to work with. Over Christmas that system played to about 800 or so people outdoors w/live performers. Plenty of noise to go around. The CS800s can go to 2ohms so I can hook up 2 subs and 4 other 8 ohm speakers between the 2 channels.

I am going to experiment with 2 PV118's and the 1200 watt mixer to see how that plays w/ the bass.

I also have a Peavey XR600g, 400 watt mixer. With 4 PR15's indoors that will hurt your ears if you are too close. Dont know if it would cover any where near 500 inside. Dont do much indoors.

I love the Pr15's for their sound, price and durability.

Note....I have rented powered subs for my PA system and ran into problems with line level signals going to the powered subs. The powered boxes wouldnt play at the same levels as the rest of the system. We tried transformers inline to boost line levels with no luck. Maybe I missed something..dont know for sure..The passive subs play good as I use line level outputs on my mixer to feed other amps that send juice down the line.

As far as I know, the mackie provides +4 db on both the balanced outputs.
