I find it interesting that Leo circumvented a legal agreement in order to design instruments for a company that sics lawyers on anyone that dares to build a knockoff of their instrument.

If Sterling Ball were on the "ball" hahah , he'd work out some kind of a deal with Kurt, and expand their market with a decent, low priced MM syle bass.

You should write to him, tell him about your business plan and how you would implement it. I bet a decent, lower priced bass never even occurred to him. Wait....

Anyway, a 99 dollar piece of junk that looks like a Stingray sure can cause a lot of excitement within a group that by and large should know better.

It's a hundred dollar bass, folks. Or it was, I guess.

OK folks here is a link to EBMM current and past patents. Interesting stuff. There are 3 primary patents but after clicking on one of the 3 you can scroll down and see other related patents. BTW I havent seen one on headstock yet. Warning - you can spend a lot of time reading this stuff but it really is some interesting information.

Can you name anything that isn't at some level a copy of something else?

It isn't like these basses have any reference to EBMM on them. So what if they resemble them? It's not like these are going to fool anyone. I fail to see what the big deal is.

You can come back with whatever pompous BS response you want. "If you owned a business" this, or "if you made something" that. I have, and I currently do, and I still don't see what the big deal is. A $99 Chinese knockoff bass resembles a bass that costs a lot more. Whoopidy doo!

Hey, Fender did it with Fender Japan. If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em . Sometimes that works out. Look at how many people LOVE their Fender Japan Products. Beats the heck out of selling them as Greco's or Tokai's for Fender doesnt' it?

I'm sure that's why EBMM has a licence deal with OLP, if they don't outright own OLP.

I agree that EBMM makes a fantastic product, however OLP does not IMO.

EBMM does not own OLP. They simply licensed the physical features that makes a Stingray a Stingray to the OLP makers.

The SUB was EBMM's value line. US made, and right @ $500. Unfortunately it was discontinued.
Folks like Mexican Fenders more.

So they EBMM could also easily licence Douglas/SX/Team International/Rondo etc. to build them as well if they wanted to, and quite possibly put out a better product than OLP, and make some money on somthing that they don't have a dime into producing, distributing, standing behind etc.

Or I guess EBMM/Sterling Ball can stand their ground, and continue to only licence OLP to build the "official" copy.
I personaly wouldn't pay what they're asking for an OLP untill they put out a much better product.

Would I spend say $150 on an SX branded Stingray? Yup, I probalby would knowing the level of quality I've seen in the SX line. Douglas? Hey, I might even go for one of those.

Would I spend $250-$300 on an OLP? Nope, it's a $150 bass on it's best day IMO. That's being generous also IMO.

The way it stands now, Sterling gets none of my money. If they had a licencing agreement with Rondo, Mr. Ball might see a few of my hard earned dollars.

Not chocking off $1600 for an EBMM with a flatsawn neck either. So, Mr. Ball looses out on my money on that end as well.

They probably should have, unless Rondo found some kind of loophole in the previous agreement with EBMM regarding the SX debacle. They've been down this road before. Can't imagine that Rondo would not know what they were getting ito this time. We'll all just have to wait and see how this all plays out.

Did Rondo sell out of all their stock or did Sterling Ball go after them again, or both?

Time will tell.
