I'm not sure which strings I should choose and need your help. I am looking for a deep bass sound and the stock strings I have on my bass now are too bright. I have a Squier 70's Vintage Modified Bass. I am down to three: D'addario ECB81 XL Chromes, DR Nickel Lo-Riders, and the Rotosound RS66LD. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as long as they are under $40. Thanks for the help!

I don't know, but to me asking which strings you should buy is like asking which meal you should order at a restaurant. Three different people could tell you three different things and you might not like any of the things they suggest once you order it.

Personally, I would go for steel over nickel at the moment in most cases. On the other hand I like the nickel Fodera strings I am using on one of my basses. Unfortunately the only way to know what you like is to try things out.

Steel is brightter than nickel in almost all cases, and that is the opposite of what he wanted. So my vote is still nickel

That is a point. On the other hand the Foderas I am using on that one bass are pretty bright and have stayed bright for a long time. Gauge can affect the brightness of a string too I think. Lighter gauge strings tend to be more bright than heavier gauge strings, I have found.

But generally speaking, I agree that steel is usually brighter than nickel.

Personally, I would all 3 sets and try them out. Take notes and record them strung up for reference. Play them everyday and see which set stays in tune, breaks in, easier, keeps its brightness, etc. YOU will be the judge on that.

When I first started playing, I tried every brand & fad on the block. Now, I keep it simple and stick with a brand/gauge that works for me. Keep your ears open...
