I have begun the season with two students working on the Nanny/Dragonetti concerto, first movement. Is there anyone else who thinks this is the most stupid piece of music?

Double Bass Dragonetti/Nanny concerto

Yes, it's very stupid, for seasoned professionals or anyone with an ear for music composition, especially compositions from the same time period. However, there is a reason it was once called the Dragonetti "Student's Concerto in A." Students like to play it.
I'd never heard it called a student concerto, that's interesting. I'm still going to steer them to something else. I don't think I can listen to this all year. 
Absolutely. I also think the overly extended harmonic passages are worth working on. But, as a serious piece of music to perform, feh. A lot of the Viennese concertos have similar passages and are much better music, not to mention some of Dragonetti's own music.
Out of interest, Neil, what level of proficiency are your students at, eg what grade? The concerto itself looks a fair bit more that a "student" level, more like I'm about to graduate;-) .... One is a HS senior who I taught all through middle school, but they didn't study privately in HS for some reason, but now wants to audition for music schools. This is the piece they've been working on so I will just work with them on it.
The other student playing Dragonetti is a college freshman, but not a music major. She plays pretty well, and the Dragonetti shows up in the third Vance book, so that's where she is currently. I'm sorry to say that the teacher who just had her progress through these books hasn't done her any favors. We need to backtrack and gain some basic technique.
