Dream bass turned up to be a disaster

Okay, here's my problem.

I recently purchased an Yamaha RBX JM2 over the Internet.
Well... that's where the disaster started.

Although not a JM fan, I always loved the look of the bass with the tight string spacing and etc. But if I were to buy that bass in Canada (where I live now) I had to pay $1500 cdn., and to order it to try meant I had to buy it, so I bought it from a shop down in the States for about $950 cdn. As it arrived at my doorstep, I quickly opened it up and... oh my God.

The build quality of the bass was so poor I wanted to fall down on my knees and cry. The finish on the neck/ body was sub-par at best, numerous dust specs and what not. The worst part was that it came with the battery connecter already been damaged. Seriously, what gives?:(

After fixing that battery connecter, I plugged it in and gave it a go... and another disaster.

I know, I've heard that this bass was not versatile, but my goodness me, it was far worse that I'd ever imagine. I really was literally crying at this point. :bawl:


So, I'm probably going to trade this bass in for a TRB1006.
I should've just bought a TRB at the first place, yeah I know.
I've learned my lesson the hard way.

Oh and in case you are wondering... Yes I'd like some sympathy, thank you very much. :crying:

Really??? Damnn... I was actually thinking about picking up one of those.

I currently have the RBX 6JM (older model) and love it. I'm just not a huge fan of the pickups... but besides that, it looks cool and plays really well.

I know maybe you're not into the RBX's now.. BUT.. give the 6JM a try. It IS a good buy. By the way, I live in Toronto, so I had to buy one from the states as well via Ebay.

Just my 2cents.

Actually 6JM was what I REALLY wanted, but I just couldn't find one in good condition... Plus I just cannot trust eBay, but that's just me.

But I heard a lot of good things about TRB's, so I think I'll give that a try tomorrow at a local shop. I hope I like it.

When I post the pictures of my recently acquired 1997 MIA Fender P '62 Reissue, it might make you feel better.:crying: The bass was described as having a "few dings". I seriously think it was dragged behind a truck for a few miles the condition is so bad.

There are deals to be had on eBay, but we are all asking for it when we buy items from people we don't know (or have a business relationship with) and also sight unseen.

It sucks when you get a bass you are wanting to love and it doesn't live up to expectations.:mad:

Yes, how disappointing.

But yes, get your $$$ back, and get a TRB! I just scored this Beauty from 2000! Upgraded Bartolini Pre, and 35" scale!

I guess that is one of the reasons I prefer Pre-Owned instruments. The "Bugs" get worked out for you. Plus a Bump or 2 along the way...:D

If it's any consolation, it looks awesome in the pic! I can definitely see why you were gassing for it! The upside is that because you bought it in the US and saved so much, your trade in value at a local CDN dealer should be more or less on par with what you paid for it - if contacting the seller for a refund doesn't work out. Was it bought used, or new? If new, there should be a warranty to cover the battery connector, and maybe even the finish. I'd say all of those issues should be addressed by the shop, especially if it is new, but even if it was used.

Initially I wanted to buy the RBX-JM2 . But then paying 1000 bucks for the bass only doesn't seem worth it(I am a DT and JM fan). So I rather add another 200bucks to get my Ibanez SR1006 which comes with neck-thru construction, Bartolinis and Hard casing. Seems worth the extra 200 for me. But yeah the TRB is fantastic as well. But I wish Yamaha throw us a case as well...

However, being a JM fan, I do want to own something that he uses, so I had this :P

The JM2s seem really weird. I've heard the JM1s are basically amazing.

The JM2s seem to have REALLY inconsistant build quality. Some people say they are amazing, some people say they're terrible. I tried one out (Huge JM fan and I had to give it a go!), and, while it was the first time I'd played a 6 string and was really confused, the general sound and playability didn't seem very good. I pretty much DOUBT JM plays one of these basses from the shop shelve. Either that or JM is VERY good at setting his tone, because he made his JM2s have dozens of different sounds... :/

Anyway, who cares, he plays Bongos now. Go get a bongo!!

However, if I ever see a JM1 cheap....... ;P

Thanks guys for your replies.

I've already sent e-mails to Yamaha concerning this matter, but as one of you said if I can make money (or get same amount of money I paid) by selling this bass here I won't even bother with dealing with Yamaha. I'm gonna head to a local music shop in a bit and see how much they'd offer. If that doesn't work... then I'll simply return it to the shop I bought it from, although that might be a big pain in the arse.

By the way, I've purchased this bass from Instrument Pro.

I've not heard good things about the RBX JM2 unfortunately. People say the pickup is weak and that the neck has an odd profile. I'm a major JM fan myself, but I would not get that bass. He's endorsing MM Bongos now, officially or otherwise, and he's been seen playing the prototype 6-string models.
