drilling pickup lead tunnels...?

Hi.
First of all, blakeck2, welcome to TalkBass.
Secondly, kudos for using the search function.
Thirdly, the above statement is spot on, the long thin cavity, has a minimal affect on sound.
I used to amaze old-timer woodworkers (I was 16) in the community college woodshop when I needed to drill the hole for the LP I was working on. The body was about 3cm thick and the lenght of the hole was about 40 cm IIRC. When the needed drill bit was next to impossible to find, I went to the metal shop, made the 50cm long drill bit the old fashioned blacksmithing way and drilled the hole. Right there under the nay-sayers eyes (there was quite a many of those). Got a bit of a reputation that day

All the information so far is great! Here is a tip that may help. (Worked great for me). If you have two long drill bits, you can go partway through from either direction you choose, then take the loose bit and stick it in the hole you just drilled (blank end first). Then, drill from the opposite direction. Keep in perfect alignment with the other bit and go slow. When you see the loose bit start to wiggle, you're there. Pull the loose bit out and go just a bit further to finish the hole. You can then clear the channel out with a piece of scrap wire. Done!
I routed/drilled all the tunnels before I glued the body wings on my neck through. Just marked the beginning from the pickup cavities and drilled far enough to reach the electronic cavity (which I do after glueing). Was absolutely easy.
