Driver Advice

I built this cab out of some spare birch (W13"xH14"xD15") with a slotted shelf port 2"x12" (about). It is loaded with a Dayton Audio PA255 10" driver.
  • Nominal Diameter 10"
  • Bolt Circle Diameter 9.646
  • Power Handling (RMS) 300 Watts
  • Power Handling (MAX) 600 Watts
  • Impedance 8Ω
  • Frequency Response 46 to 3,500Hz
  • Sensitivity 92.6dB 2.83V/1m
  • Voice Coil Diameter 2"
Paired with a BAM200 it sounds pretty good and I have been using it for practice room and smaller gigs.

The "opportunity" is that the cab gives out before the amp when pushed. I am wondering if a driver upgrade could provide more SPL. I don't think the amp is hitting the wall because I can get more out of it into my greenboy12cube.

Any thoughts or driver recommendations appreciated. I am considering a Kappa Pro-10A for better sensitivity and power handling.

In my quick calculation figuring the box has something like just over 1 cubic foot of internal volume and that your port is just 3/4 of an inch long that puts the tuning with that speaker up in the 95hz area.
When I pulled up the specs for the Dayton speaker for a box your size they suggest a sealed no port design.

Increasing your port length to 7 1/4 inches drops the tuning the about 65hz. with a better looking response, the tuning now has a big peak at 100hz.

Didn't take the time to do power handling and Xmax calculations.

Use a high pass filter.

Port area is way too large for the cabinet and port depth (thickness of the baffle). The port depth needs to be ~6” minimum (8” maximum) to get a reasonable tuning. I would try that first.

That said, the other issue is that there’s only so much volume you can get out of a single 10” driver (especially with a 92dB sensitivity) in a small cabinet.

OK - Thanks for the responses...apparently the port is more critical than I was considering so I took the grill of and measured (I was going from bad memory). It is 10" deep. I originally had it 8" deep from some napkin math and added 2"...trial and error seemed to sound better.

Is it correct to say that if I replaced with a driver with 6db more sensitivity it would be noticeably louder, or would there likely be some other constraint on SPL?

good question. The only thing that speaks to this is I do get more out of the amp through my greenboy12cube.
The Greenboy has much higher sensitivity and greater low frequency extension. I think you will find that both your speaker and your amp are at their limits.
