Drop D on short scale?

Hiya, I got a great deal on a Reverend Wattplower and was wondering what the scoop is on adding an Ultralight drop D tuner. I've read that these aren't as practical on short scales. Can anyone confirm or deny?

It comes down to strings and preference. Personally, I don't. Before you order anything, try dropped D and see what happens. If you like it, order the tuner.
