Dual Mics

When watching old recordings of live bands, I often see the lead vocalist using two mics, attached to the same stand (first to come to mind is Robert Plant).

What's the point of that?

I believe they were wired so that they cancelled out the background noise. Can't remember series/parallel/out of phase or exactly how they did it, but I think that's right. I am sure someone here will correct me if I am wrong.

i saw wolfmother do this once. but i think one of them might have been one of those carbon mics or a coppertone to give him all that distorted vocal stuff.

If the mics are exactly the same, they can be used for noise cancelling/feedback control.
Loud Wall Of Sound type applications may require that.


More often than that, the other mic is for recording/filming purposes AFAIK.

An effect mic is a possibility, but rare these days as soundpersons and foot-controller vocal processors are readily available to make using two mics unnecessary.

I think Robert Plant's other mic is a harmonica mic.

not entirely sure you can simulate a coppertone or carbon mic all that easily. and it would be far more expensive to do so.

thats like trying to mimic a green bullet mic with effects. waste of time.. just get the harmonica mic.

Modern bands commonly do one if they have IEM.. one is a talk back.. other is FOH
