Double Bass Dull sounding D-string

After my string hunt, I've settled on Spiro Solos downtuned, but I've noticed a consistent pattern with my bass. No matter what set I put on, the D string is either extra pronounced (as it was with zyex medium) or slight dull and fuzzy (more pronounced with guts, but still present with the solos).

Is this a common characteristic of basses, of American Standard basses, is my particular bass weird, or am I being too picky?

If this is a fixable issue, what would see as the most likely culprit? The sound post needing adjustment?

It's a general problem with basses as far I know.

I`m no expert of any kind but sounds like a soundpost issue to me.

BTW, lucky you, I`d love to play a American Standard!

I was thinking some of this is a soundpost issue. I'm also torn with whether or not to adjust it myself following the few guides on the interwebs, or just have someone do it. My problem is not trusting luthiers anymore.
