I have a Squier Mini P Bass that is currently strung with a D'Addario EXL160S roundwound set. These are gauge 45 - 105. Due to the short lifespan of these strings, I am looking for something else.
At this point, I want to clarify that I have some real intonation issues with this bass. I have gone through a process of having the nut filed to the correct depth and I have ensured that intonation is set correctly using the 12th fret. Regardless of that, notes sometimes seem out of tune around the 3rd fret - particularly on the E string. I don't fully understand why but I think it might have to do with the roundwound strings and the 28.6-inch scale. When I check random notes with the tuner, they appear to be close to accurate.
I prefer a bright sound and use stainless steel, roundwound strings 99% of the time. Therefore, I am looking at two options from Dunlop:
1. The 45 - 105 super bright roundwound stainless steel set for short scale.
2. The 45 - 105 flatwound stainless steel set for short scale.
I understand the Dunlop stainless steel flatwounds have a brightness that is long lasting.
I'm on the fence about whether I should go with roundwound or flatwound strings. If the flatwounds are likely to help with the intonation issues with this bass, I will take that route. I keep thinking that the uneven surfaces of the roundwound strings where they make contact with the frets are the cause of the intonation issues - but I really don't know. And for the record, I fret with a light touch.
Thanks in advance.
