Duran Duran w/JT on ACL

Caught this episode of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS this weekend with John Taylor and Duran Duran. Sounded great and JT seems to have left the Cirrus and gone with a four-string Dingwall Combustion in a similar Teal color (and a black Combustion Five for 'Reach Out for the Sunrise', with it's chugging sections in low D). The big Peavey 810 rig is gone with an Ampeg fridge standing in its usual spot stage left to the right of Roger's drums.

They sound great, sound is well mixed, and I got to double check if I'm playing his parts in the same spots he plays them in. I was right MOST of the time. JT has always been a favorite, and good to see them sounding great all these years later, instead of just phoning a bored, greatest hits set.

Does anybody know what Ampeg cabinet that is, it is not a 810 for sure, and not a 610 either, look how wide & pudgy the cabinet is, is it possibly a 412 cabinet?

I'm mostly a rock/hard rock/metal guy (not extreme stuff, like black/death metal - think classic, Sabs, Maiden, etc.) - but John Taylor is a great player, and Duran Duran is an iconic band. If I were to be in a cover band, I'd want to be doing a couple of their tunes for sure...

I watched it with bass in hand and tried to play along...major fail. John Taylor is amazing. One of my favorite bass players.

I liked Duran Duran a lot when I was a kid. They were a big deal in the 80s.

Just saw DD at one of their Hollywood Bowl shows - I was pretty far back, in the center. Sound there can be hit or miss, but the mix was quite good, and JT's Dingwalls sounded super clear and defined. One of the better live bass sounds I've heard in a while in a big venue. Made me miss the AB1 I used to own!
And major props to Simon - I swear he sings better now at 63 than he did in the old days, and he carries the show with plenty of energy (and never comes off as "awkward aging front man...")

Just chiming in- was listening to 'Rio' for the first time in a long time while comparing DACs because I am a dork. That said I did not remember this but the bass is friggin' GREAT. Going deeper - had no idea how good John Taylor is- really creative pocket lines. Love the tones as well- great mixes on Duran Duran records.

Glad Duran Duran gets some respect here- those guys were actually really good. A fact belied or obscured by the fact that my sister had posters of them all over her bedroom wall back in the day. Who knows, maybe she still does?
