EA Doubler II "fart" sound when playing

Last time I corresponded with Gary he said he would try to be available to service amps as long as he could. He’s a good guy and nice to work with. I’ve got three EA amps and love all of them.

I agree that Gollihur might be the best source to obtain his contact info.

It seems like I’ve been mentioning this a lot lately, but using a high-pass filter is a good idea. Playing a speaker below its tuning frequency could easily cause problems.

That's good to hear - I may give him a shout in the near future then. For now I'm going to troubleshoot a few things mentioned here and see what happens.

I hear you there. I play with an always-on Broughton HPF/LPF, so my low end is generally cut around ~40Hz. Really helpful in keeping the mud out.

Great! I’d think about raising it to ~ 50 Hz though. That filter is only 12 dB per octave if I recall so it doesn’t act very quickly.

For anyone still invested:

I just spent 20+ min at home using the head through each of my cabs, using the same AC cable I was using when I took it to a gig last weekend (when it made fart noises again).

I CAN'T GET THIS DAMN THING TO REPLICATE THE FART NOISE WHEN PLAYING AT HOME. Yet both times I've taken it out to a gig it has made the noises.

What am I missing here?!

I wonder if this is similar to the issue some iAmp users have had (including me) where just simply plugging in caused static discharge into the buffer chip that's wired to the inputs. At one point I went through multiple input boards (which feed the preamp) because of this and I remember Gary knowing that was the problem because the input started getting farty.

I thought they fixed the problem but this kinda sounds like the problem.

I just can't figure out why it's making noises when I try to use it at gigs but seems perfectly fine at home.

I reached out to Gary Gibilisco a couple days ago, so I'm awaiting a response before I go any further locally.

Obviously, if I had my choice I'd rather have it diagnosed by one of the fellas involved in its creation. Fingers crossed!

The doubler II has an internal HPF switch for both channels. Have you tried seeing if adjusting the HPF frequency makes a difference? The factory position is 25Hz but you can set to 50 and 80 and see if it clears up the issue. Similarly the boost setting for each channel, are they on or off?

I did open up the amp and look at these when I first got it. I believe the HPF is set to 25 but I haven't played around with the other center points. I did make sure the boosts were off when I was in there.

The weird thing about all this is that it hasn't made the offending noises once when I've played it at home, but both times I've brought it to a gig it has farted out.

I've got a potential appt with an area tech next week, so if I don't hear back from Gary G. I'll probably just go that route. Thanks for the input!
