Double Bass EA Micro 300

EA had announced recently about this new amp they were making. It's 300 watts and weighs less than 3lbs.

I thought the same thing but when have the guys at EA ever put out anything that wasn't up to standards? I think for most of my low volume gigs and jams (and even some of the higher ones), this will be perfect.

Personally, I'll wait to see if the this statement from the EA website below will
produce higher powered versions of the Micro sometime in the near future.
This is a nice amplifier for smaller gigs, but I'm not sure it has enough power
to drive EA's older VL 108's and 208's. They are 8 ohms and like a lot of power.

The amp also needs some notch/high pass filters, combo jacks, and a phase switch.
 
I just wouldn't feel right with only 150 watts into 8 ohms. I am using a 1000 watt (Tim Allen grunts, please) Carvin head for electric that I think sounds pretty good (not up to EA standards, though.) I like having a lot of power to spare, even for the big bass.
 
I think the most important thing is that they've addressed what I feel is a switching amps Achilles' heel.

EA has wisely addressed the sometimes questionable power levels we encounter on the stage from hell (I've been there, I'll bet you have, too). Their 4” by 4” Switching Power Supply features true Power Factor Correction from 100-240 volts and from 50-60 Hz, so if you're caught in a low voltage situation at the end of a pier in NJ (happens to me!), the Micro 300 can still deliver a cool 300 watts (@ 4ohms), even down to 100 volts.

So if future models at least double the power out for more head room, and add some of the DB necessities mentioned, I'll be intrigued.
 
I've talked about this ad nauseum so one more time won't hurt. The amount of power you need is highly dependent upon the sensitivity of the speaker cabinet. The Wizzy is rated at 103 dB SPL @ 1 meter @ 1 watt. Every 3-dB change in sensitivity requires a factor of two change in power. So, if your cabinet is only, say, 97 dB SPL @ 1 meter @ 1 watt (and many are not even that high), then that 6-dB reduction will require you to have a four-fold increase in power in order to achieve the same sound-pressure-level as the Wizzy.

In concrete terms, if you push a Wizzy at its full rated power of 200 watts, you will produce 126 dB SPL @ 1 meter. Now, if you had a cabinet rated at 97 dB SPL @ 1 meter @ 1 watt, you would have to push it with 800 watts to achieve that level. Chances are that would be well above the rated power of the cabinet and would produce smoke.

The message here is that what counts is the sound pressure level you can produce, not the amplifier power, per se.
