Double Bass EA NL210 series II

Has anyone heard the newer NL210? I'm wondering if there is any difference? I'm still looking for a doubling cab.

I've been using a berg IP112 for DB and an AE410 for EB and some doubling which has been sometimes ok sometimes not. The EA is about the right size and weight for a doubling gig if anyone has any experiences?

I took a look at the old specs for the NL 210 and the difference seems to be a weight reduction of 7 lbs by using Italian Poplar as the cabinet material. So instead of 44 lbs the series II weighs in at 37 lbs. I'm guessing that the IP is a little small for EB and the 410 is to hard to tame for DB? I love the older EA cabinets for DB but I haven't had any experience with the newer models.

Adding a Berg HT112 would probably make it a pretty nice set up for doubling. Maybe with a Radial PZ-Pre, or an EBS Microbass(not sure if either of these have enough gain though).

The NL210 does look like it might be a great doubling cabinet. Bergantino AE210 looks good too, if not as light weight. I haven't found a cab yet that I really like for doubling on. Seems to always be a comprimise.

The IP112 is great up to a point for DB I find. I'm using a sansamp BDDI with a realist. I have but don't gig with TD1, U5, and have tried PZ pre, old tc pedal pre, and a few others. I also had the 112ER extension cab. Was cool rig with my Demeter tube pre but too dark/wooly with 212's for DB and a slightly too dark for my EB taste.

Although I did an orchestra plus rhythm section on EB with demeter and IP112 and was perfect.

As of today I picked up an old EV TL15 box which i've put an Aguilar 15 driver into and seems to be cool. Will use it this weekend and report back. I still really like 210 box's though. 12 months ago i tried the NL 210 and Ae410 but was doing mostly EB and small DB so went with the bigger box. But an in the middle cab would be great.

I've had an NL210 for over 3 years now. It's not a bad DB cabinet, I've used it as such many times. The way the tweeter crosses over does create a honk as you move up on the G string that is difficult to tame. For whatever reason it sounded very nice with a Glockenklang Heart Rock, but that's not quite the most portable head for DB playing.

I have since seen the light with a VL208 cabinet. Unfortunately it doesn't always work for electric when you want a more modern sound. I love the NL210 for electric playing and actually just picked up a second one for really large gigs.

I've spent allot of time and money trying to find the right set up to double with no luck. As it turns out very few of my gigs actually require me to play both instruments significantly, but I have brought out a VL208/NL210 stack and swapped the speaker cable as needed, that's to much work for me though. So if I've got an electric gig where I am going to play DB for 1 set for some swing tunes I will deal with what the NL210 can do. On the other side if I am doing a jazz gig and the guys want to jam out the last set with some fusion stuff I'll take the VL208.

There is ONE acception to the rule, I used to own a SA410 (Sadowsky 410) which is almost identical to the Bergantino HS410. Jim Bergantino designed the Sadowsky cabinet and it is over 95% similar. That cabinet is as good as a VL208 for DB playing and is a killer electric bass cabinet. BUT you have to be comfortable lugging around a 85lb 410 cabinet.

There will almost always be a sacrifice on one end or the other and from my limited experience an IP112 is probably as good as any choice.

Too true!! It's either the better DB rig and not your fav EB sound or vice versa! I tried the EV bin with the 15 Aguilar driver, was better for DB but not quite enough definition for pitch. Will try it on more gigs before I spring for another cab in the NL210. Although maybe the Berg HS210 might be worth a listen too.Thanks to those that have responded.
