Anyone tried it?

Loving the Toluca Lake Blue cheap-O 'Ray 5-string...like I have never loved a 5-string before. This one is actually NOT ugly. It's a miracle.

I don't need the lower range...but sometimes it would be nice to play higher notes in lower positions, especially in the middle octave of the keys of D–G. So I got to thinking about adding a high C instead of a low B.

Yes, highly recommended. It's like having a standard bass and a tenor in one package I even had tuned a 6-str. EADGCF. (Also having used 5ths tuning on a 5-str. CGDAE.)

Kinda sorta. I have 2 minis that start at A: a 4 string (ADGC), and a 6 string (ADGCFBb). Having an extended upper range comes in handy with certain tunes. The loss of the lower range is a pain in the transposer with certain tunes, as well.

This holds true for my BEAD basses, as well. Great for some things, horrible for others. It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

Much less frustrating if you're normally a 4 string player.

I have all 5 of my 5-strings tuned E-C including my NS electric upright. I play primarily in big bands and the charts call for sub-E notes almost never but frequently call for upper register notes. Having the C string makes it much easier to play upper register notes lower on the neck.
