EAR TRAINING

HOW?!?!? I have tried and tried to hear the changes on cds or radio. I can't hear the change let alone hear the interval. After working with an online ear training program, I can only get a small amount correct.I can hear them if I follow along reading a lead sheet. Is there any hope for someone that has to use charts all the time? Is it something that I can learn from a teacher?

There are three main ways I do my ear training.

1. Through websites like [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. A great collection of really useful and highly customisable exercises.

2. Through transcribing music. Start with something easy; get some early Beatles and figure out the chords, get some Foo Fighters and figure out the basslines. If you read music that helps, but it's not necessary as long as you can figure out the line and play along.

3. Sing as much as you can; sing melodies that you can play, and try to play things that you sing. Sing along with stuff.

Hope that helps!

Very helpful, Thank You guys, I think the most important points I've realized is that it takes time and don't give up. There is no silver bullet. There is a big difference between "Knowing" and "Doing". I "Know" the intervals, I can play the intervals, Now here is the rub..............I just can't ID the intervals (YET) when listening.

Only4strings, I have a similar problem. The amp that I'm using supports playing exercises that progress though the intervals. It plays the root, then a note, then back to the root, working its way up the scale and down. I play along with the program and it's helping me to pick up on the intervals.
