Ebay fake - Fender Jazz bass

But I can hear it now...

"Thanks for your information but I have checked the serial number and it says 1985. The buyer can decide whether he wants it and if he/she buys it and thinks it's counterfeit I offer returns and will give a refund." That's what they all say...except in worse grammar.


I told him to google "1985 Fender bass" and compare. Is it really that hard to do very basic research?

The serial number is in a very very wrong place - it should be on the headstock below the 'Fender'. It is probably a correct serial but it was stolen - if you look at it it looks like someone printed it off a computer and slapped it on there.

The "Contour body" part is off-center, terribly..but a 'Standard' Fender would not have it during those years.

The 'Fender' logo is not period correct. It looks like one you'd find on early 2000's Fender USA...or MIM Deluxes

The neckplate 'F' script looks very weird...and the neck plate looks too small.

The color is...not Fender at all.

Not really. I've bought literally hundreds (I flip many) on ebay and I've only received very few fakes...and you don't see a whole many fakes on there (at least in the Fender realm, where I do most of my work). They are generally not hard to spot, even without viewing in person. Many of the people who sell them are unaware (sadly for them they became aware after the fact that they paid USA price for a Squier) and they alter their descriptions to fit inbound information about their guitar. Some people though, like this guy, surely disregard their information.

As for the used selling for retail - auction sites like ebay are one of the few wholly capitalistic marketplaces, where the consumer determines the price upon demand. That's why one day a 1995 USA J-bass will go for $400 and two hours later another will go for $550. Ebay reveals the good and bad about free market economics.

I can't even remember seeing a "Standard" Fender USA from the mid-80's. They may have stopped production altogether...but I am no expert and that's info that's best left divulged by someone who knows what they are talking about.;)
