Yep! That is THE recording to get. I reviewed it when it came out. His interpretation is fantastic as he uses the repeats to do new ideas rather than just a lackluster reiteration.

I'm not a Baroque scholar by any standard, but I THINK that approach would have been completely normal during the period.

Exactly. But too many bassists play the repeats without adding any interest.
