Eden/Gallien Krueger Options for Minimoog Bass Synth

Note: I ordered the 210XST, but need advice on Eden amp or QSC amp. See my response below.

I saw this topic brought up a while ago, however, since some new products are available in he market, I'd thought I check to see what some folks may suggest as options.

I'm a keyboard player looking for an option to provide a little more low end on keyboards, especially when using a Minimoog synth.

I'm currently using a Yamaha DXR12 powered speaker which has a line level output to send to another source such as a powered subwoofer or amp. The DXR12 has a high pass filter, so I can set it so it only provides frequencies above 100 hz. The line output provides the full frequency range. I was thinking maybe the Eden 210XST would work with an Eden head or power amp like QSC. I've also heard that the new Gallien Krueger MB-210II would be an option.

I'm not looking for anything powerful for large concerts, this is for rehearsals and small gigs. What I'm mostly concerned with is the frequency range. I've tested out a few powered speakers like the QSC series, and like the Yamaha DXR series, you really need a larger subwoofer to get down to the 30 to 35 hz range which is my goal. I've actually tested the new Yamaha DXS12 subwoofer, and although it provides at lower range than the DXR, it's more of a boomy sound as opposed to be "tight and low"..... if this makes sense.

Which cabinet and/or head would provide the low frequency range as described? Please any options which may work.

By the way, I've used Roland amps in the past, and they just don't cut it for me anymore.

I went ahead and ordered the 210XST cabinet.

I was doing some research and see that QSC makes a stereo amp called the GX7 which pushes out 1,000watts per side at 4 ohms. They also make the GX5 which pushes about 750 watts at 4 ohms. I'm not sure if this is too much wattage, but the QSC has a built in filter which allows the amp to only pass through frequencies under 100hz to the speaker which I would send to the 210XST.

My question is, if I use the QSC stereo amp and only pass through frequencies under 100hz to the 210XST, can I simply turn off the tweeter control? The whole point of this is to use the lower frequency response of the cabinet since it can go down to 30hz or so.

If it's not advisable to use with the QSC stereo amp, please let me know which Eden amp model needed to push the lowest wattage to use with the 210XST. Again, I'm not doing large venues.... This is just for small to medium size clubs to add low end when playing the Minimoog bass. Thanks.

I play bass and synth in my current band, and I've found that off-the-shelf cabs don't go as low as I need. I've had good luck with a fEarful cab, although I want to add another one, as even that seems strained with the synth. Amps I've used are GK 1001RB-II and Ampeg SVT7 Pro.

As far as production cabs, I've considered trying the Ampeg 410HLF, as i've heard it can go pretty low. I'm currently using a 610HLF, but compared to the fEarful, it sounds like carboard, and can't go as low as I like. You may even consider getting a subwoofer for the lows and maybe a 2x10 for everything above a certain frequency.

I agree on loving Eden gear but probably not what you are looking for. I would find a used bag end 15. They go for around 250 and are a great neutral speaker. They under rate the power handling so feel free to put go over the recommendation with out fear. When I use my bag 18 I put about 700 watts to it when it is rated at 300.

Wow.... I'm surprised how some are saying the 210XST cabinet is not a good option to add some low end to keyboards/bass synth. I didn't think this would be a big issue since the Yamaha DXR12 is a full range speaker and I would use the filter to cutoff the frequencies below 100hz.

You're basically asking a full range cabinet (just like your Yamaha) to be a subwoofer. A purpose built sub with a crossover would be a much better option for what you want to do.

I understand, and it makes sense. It's just too much for me to haul a subwoofer like the QSC KSub or a Yamaha DXS12 subwoofer to rehearsal every weekend. I much rather haul a smaller and/or more rigid cabinet.

Okay, thanks.... I guess if it doesn't work out with the 210XST for bass synth, I do have a Warwick Corvette 5 that I mess around with a home (I'm not a real bass player). So, I guess I'll hook it up to see what it sounds like through the cabinet.

Take a look at the Acme line of cabinets. They will reproduce 30Hz without a problem. I too am of the opinion that a 2x10 as a subwoofer will leave a lot to be desired.

Update 01/22/14:

I'm currently testing out the Eden WT550 with the 210XST. I took this combo to band rehearsal last week, and the bass player even said my keyboards sounded good through the rig. I've sold off the Yamaha DXR because I needed eq the get the right sound, and I didn't want to be forced to buy an eq. I'm running my keyboards into an Ashly LX308-B, and then mono out to the WT550. I'm running the eq pretty much flat. Depending on the sound used, I may cut back the low end a bit or add just a little highs.

This setup seems like it will work for keyboards and bass synth. However, the 210XST is becoming too heavy for me to haul all every week for rehearsal. So, I'm interested in knowing if something like the Markbass Traveler 102p would work just for rehearsal purposes.
