Educate me on Tone Control Capacitors

I use a .01 with my J bass wired standard, and I notice the same "action" in the tone that you described. I like the tone, though, and don't feel like I'm missing anything.

There's more than one way to electrically bring in the tone control network on a Fender. I think you could try to re-wire the volume so that the tone pot is coming off the output leg, rather than the input leg. See if that makes a diff in the "action" of the tone control.

Agreed - switching caps in and out is great - there's a constant resistance. However, the slope doesn't change. Changing caps still leaves you with 6dB/octave slope.

Yes, what changes is the "-3dB point" - I *think* we work mostly in the "knee" region, so in a sense, it does change the slope there...

As an update...

I installed the ToneStyler, and it was well worth it IMO. I gets me all the treble roll-off settings I want, and the highest (bypass) setting is great for slap.

No - the "-3dB point" is a frequency, not a slope.

Now you did it. I may have to go ahead and do that with mine.

I agree with you on the fully closed sound on the stock P5, it's awful. I like it mine for about the first half of it's travel.

BTW, what are the pot and cap values that come stock on the P5?
