Educated Opinion Needed!

Hello folks,

I own a 5 string Fender Squier Jazz Bass, nothing special in the sound dept. (though it feels great!), and want to upgrade my pickups cause honestly, whatever they put on the bass in assembly is horrendous and I can't get a good tone out of them worth mentioning. (Also, the bridge pickup shorts out frequently.)

In addition to this, I currently use Ernie Ball strings and have heard that Rotosound strings give a better sound for jazz/funk (???), so I was wondering if I could get some confirmation/disagreement to this end.

As far as pickups/strings go, I'm fairly new to all of this bass equipment/mechanics/technology stuff, so I was wondering if some of you could give me your opinions on what are some good (and monetarily worthwhile) pickups/strings to consider. I'd especially appreciate the opinions of those who play jazz/funk/blues and who gig on a regular basis. That being said, I'm willing to listen to anyone!

I'm especially looking for a lighter jazz/funk sound, though versatility would be preferable. I've heard it said, though, that all you have to do to get a more rock/metal sound out of your bass is to tweak the amp settings a bit...taken from my own experience, it's much more difficult to get a clean and punchy sound out of crappy pickups than it is to get a hard rock or metal sound.

One other question: changing the pickups changes the way your active elec. dials and settings can modify the overall sound, too, right?

Once again, I'm substantially inexperienced with understanding some aspects of EQ and preparing/setting a suitable and non-overpowering and tasteful sound, so any help and advice people can give me that might clue me in on how to improve sound AFTER I get the upgrade would be helpful, too!

For value and versatility Wilde J-45 are worth looking into although they might require additional routing depending on your Squire. Is the bass active already? Someone might recommend DR High-beams or indeed Rotosound 66 down the line....I think you want to avoid anything smaller than .130 for the B

Thanks so much! Yes, my bass is already active, so that eliminates the need for further tweaking in that area (at least until I dig up that fabled buried treasure in my backyard and become a millionaire overnight).
