Double Bass effects for bass

hello, I would like your opinion please

I play bass and double bass (mostly jazz, bossa nova)
I would like to add some effects on my bass sound
I was advised a compressor, a chorus and a delay

it would allow me to have surround sound original

I listened to the bass player EST group, DAN BERGLUND that plays with a bow with a distortion pedal and fuzz, but it's not the sound I'd like
I know this is the player who makes his own sound but the pedals, without abuse, may be useful
thank you for your help
for information, I have a 6 string bass fender stee Bayley, and two basses, a massive Chinese full circle with fishman AND A fishman preamp pro, and a bass david GAGE Czech-Ease with a micro THE REALIST
My amp is a GENZ BENZ Shuttle 3.0-10T

again thank you AND SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, i m french !!!!! nobody's perfect :help:

I would say that for mainstream jazz and latin you don't need any effect.

With a chorus/flanger and maybe some delays and a reverb you can get close to the Eberhard Weber electric double bass sound.
A compressor is only needed if your strings don't have much sustain or you play in a band with a compact pop sound. It also raises the risk of feedback. I got some very little compression on a recording of Weather Report's Birdland I played with my double bass.
If you also play solo parts a bit of reverb (only on higher frequencies) might be nice too.

Most of these effects work better with an electric bass guitar or electric double bass than with an acoustic upright, because you always hear the acoustic bass sound without effects too.

A Flanger and Octaver would be at the top of my list for stock kinda sounds that won't raise too many eyebrows in an electric jazz situation.
Reverb is another one that can be used sparingly to create acoustic type ambiance with an electric instrument. It's worked best for me playing sans batteur. (that's all my french so don't apologize about your english!)
Compression never sounds natural enough to my ear playing jazz or even blues. It's personal thing you have to try to decide. I change my mind a lot about compression but I could easily live without it live.
I've recently acquired an Eventide Mod Factor that does all kinds of harmonizing effects some of which would be very interesting used in the right place. It also gets sounds that allow you to step outside the bass player role. I get almost a pedal steel sound I use with a singer songwriter. Not being the bassist for a song or two can add some interesting variety to a set.

A lot of what you can do is the depth of your imagination, the ability to "sell" a sound and playing with people who are open minded enough to let you try.

Check out Charnett Moffett and Miles Mosley. Both have made effects an integral part of their setup. Charnett just goes about his business, but Miles really push-promotes the FX (and himself) and has youtube clips detailing his pedal board with demos etc.

I'm just a bass newb, but I do like effects pedals on DB and have a collection gathering momentum. I just picked up a Diamond Vibrato pedal & Yamaha expression pedal to mess around with (controlling depth &/or Speed), I'm aiming for some Hammond B3 organ sounds. I also picked up a Diamond Bass Comp – all from the TB classifieds. At the moment my FXboard is a home-use only experimentation thang.

Radial PZed-Pre
Snarling Dogs Wonder Wah 2
Aphex Punch Factory
Aphex Bass Xciter
Korg Toneworks 301dl Dynamic Echo.
Boss Ce-2B Chorus

Oh, and I picked up a free Boss LMB-3 Bass Limiter Enhancer with a ply bass I got last year.

On my gigging board:
Radial PZed-Pre, Boss Ce-2B Chorus and keeping A440 sacred is a Korg PitchBlack. I'll be swapping out the Chorus for the Xciter at my next gig.

Still on a quest to find the perfect Flanger. Once found, it will be a permanent part of my gigging board. All this FX madness has lead me down a dark path though – I just ordered my first slab... :hiding:

I wish there were more DB effects users/abusers to exchange ideas with. So, Bon Chance Hommcool with finding some amazing new sounds/tones – keep the faith.

I just picked up my first EUB (I know it's not a REAL bass but it's what I can afford for the moment) and I've been slappin' the slab for a few years now. :hiding:

I have been experimenting with some interesting things since I've already got a lot of gear from my slab experiences.

I'm running my EUB through this:

Sojing EUB->
ART Tube PreAmp->
Ashly Crossover (here's where it gets crazy):eyebrow:

Lows (below about 200 Hz)

DBX Gate/Compressor
Behringer SubProcessor/
Harmonic Exciter

Mids/Highs

DBX Gate/Compressor (Channel 2)
Boss Bass Overdrive
Crybaby Wah (Bass Modded)
Behringer Orchestra Chorus
Behringer Ultra Bass Flanger
Behringer Echo Machine Delay
Behringer Harmonic Exciter (channel 2)

Lows and mids mixed together with a simple 2 channel Mixer

Then through:

Behringer BX3500 Solid State Amp with Ultrabass
Fender 4x10 cab and a Crate 1x15 cab.

Obviously I don't always run everything at once, but there's some pretty cool stuff that can be done. By separating the lows from the mids/highs, I can keep the low presence clean and clear while adding any effects to the mids and highs. Using a wah with overdrive while playing Arco can yield some cool results.

If you want some interesting ideas of what can be done by adding effects to string instruments check out Ed Alleyne-Johnson. He plays violin but the concepts are the same. He uses a looper and adds several different layers.

Any thoughts/suggestions? Now I just have to actually get good at playing the upright.;)
