I'm looking for recommendations for a modestly priced electric upright bass. I will use this mostly as a travel bass when I can't transport my upright. I know I will be giving up a lot in terms of sound but I want something I can practice on and take to the occasional jazz jam. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What is your price range? On the low end, Stagg and Palatino are in the $700 range, NS wav is around $1000. And by travel, do you mean airline travel? MK makes an EUB that fits in the overhead locker called the MK Fly for some where around $2500
The MK Fly is less expensive, it is an excellent electric DB. I can travel on Easyjet with it as cabin baggage, but I'am not sure you can do it with other companies. In fact the bag size is NOT compatible with standard cabin baggage size, altough it feets the overhead locker.
I guess this thread should be stickied now that we know who makes the best one.
I believe there is no absolute 'best', and that the OP has to make his own choice based on his personal wishes, preferences, budget, ... . Yes, browse the forum, but don't buy sight-unseen. Instead go to a shop & play some is the best advice I can offer, certainly for an experienced DB player. Anything 2nd hand available locally?

I'm an electric player looking to learn upright by starting on an eub (because I don't have a large enough vehicle to transport an acoustic).
I've been listening to the MK electric upright demos on youtube and I've been blown away by them. It's the most convincing sounding eub I've ever heard. If you close your eyes you'd never know it wasn't an acoustic.
