I recently built 2x GreenBoy fEARful 15/6/1 cabs and one of them was having issues right away. I basically had no output. I tore it all apart and found a cold solder joint on one of the crossovers. Put it all back together and it has normal output but now I've noticed that I have substantial buzz when I'm not touching the strings on the guitar. I tore the cab back apart and went through the rest of it but everything seems good. Then I tried the other cab which is about a month older and never had any issues. I'm getting the same buzz on that one too. I have 2x EB MusicMan StingRays. I tried my other bass and the buzz was completely gone! So it's a problem with my (less than a year old) EB MM StingRay Special. It worked absolutely fine on Saturday. Not sure what changed. I tore it apart and thoroughly inspected the jack and all wires.
I found a couple of forums that recommended shielding the cavities of EB MM basses with copper tape and that it 100% eliminated the buzz. I’ve done this before on other basses so I went ahead and tore it apart. Shielded all cavities with copper tape. Connected the control cavity and both pickup cavities with soldered wire. Reassembled and I’d say it’s a 70% reduction in buzz but it is definitely still there. I did not shield the underside of the covers and did not shield anything on the pickups themselves. I also haven’t read between the bridge and control cavities with a meter.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I may shield the underside of the covers. I’ve heard that EB MM jacks are grounded through the plate and some people solder a wire to the plate and ground it that way. I read that EB MM pots aren’t grounded to each other and some people will daisy chain a ground wire to the back of the pot housings. I also found some suggestions about copper shielding poles or something on the back of the pickups but I was unsure what it was referring to or how to do this.
Can anyone give me some ideas or steer me in the right direction?
