any ideas why the 5th and 4th strings on my bass sounds a bit grungier/louder than the others? thanks again

Probably the strings. Different strings have different balance. I've had this problem with the E string on my 4 string P-bass. I lowered the upper side of the pickup, under the e-string. It helped, but it wasn't until I tried the set I currently use that I was perfectly happy with the balance between the e-string and the others.

Pickup not adjusted correctly? Hard to say without knowing any more specifics about your bass and what you've already tried.

Yeah check pickup height as well. Lower for softer, closer to the strings for louder.
