Elixir String Length Question

Hello all,

I just installed a set of Elixir strings on my 35" scale NS CR5 and I believe the B string isn't long enough - please see the attached photos.

To clarify, the B string has a taper to it (I believe that's what it's called) - so the full thickness of the string doesn't go all the way to the bridge - remember that the ball end of the string is fixed on the head stock side of this particular headless bass.

It should be OK. At worst it might affect intonation slightly. I've seen more blatant examples of the taper extending into the speaking area.

You could email Elixir and ask.

As far as I know, the "long scale" by Elixir is slightly shorter than the "long scale" by most other companies as they're designed for top-loading on a 34" scale, not on a 35" scale.

Measure the length of the B string from the ball end to the first taper, where the full winding ends at the other end. I would guess they're around 36.5". Can you confirm?

If I was looking for another type of coated string, I could look at the DR Dragon Skin+. I believe they have 2x different lengths:
- standard = 37 3/4" ball end to taper
- Multi-scale = 39 1/2" tapered

I'll buy the standard set (as it's cheaper) and see how it fits the NS bass ad report back at a later date.

if it is intonated, it is fine. no big deal with the taper on the bridge end. if it was at the headstock end and occured before the nut slot, it would be problematic.

I have used Elixir on 34 and 35" for years. You need X-Long scale for 35", most of the time. Some 35s can have the B clear the nut, but barely, so I just use x-long as their default.
