OK, just to mess with you all, here's a tune that I'm certain the vast majority of everyone here isn't familiar with. So this will be a bit of a Rorschach test; I'm curious of the reactions this will generate. However, it's an epic work of aching, pleading desperation. One of those songs where, if you're going to do it, bring it or stay home. First, the original, not a hit in the States but huge in Britain, and then the cover that just might have outdistanced the OG, by the guy who could have been Robert Plant. The song has also had go-rounds by Steve Marriott, Janis Joplin, Bette Midler, Duffy, and so on.




Oh, hell, let's make this a three way race...

I gots to go with Lorraine for one simple reason. The others start too big so they peak too soon. They both start with massive chords and almost announce that they're epic songs. It reminds me of the divas who try and cover Whitney Houston. They duplicate the hugeness of her voice and forget about her subtlety and nuance.

There's a line in Shakespeare In Love when Joseph Fiennes (as Shakespeare) is talking to Gwyneth Paltrow (as the ingenue novice Viola de Lessups). He tells her "don't spend it all at once". She doesn't understand so he explains that in her speech she's talking about a woman that Romeo is only half-hearted about whom the audience never even sees. If she shows her full emotion in that speech then when she meets Juliet, the love of her life, she'll have nowhere to go.

It's got to build or it just becomes a wall of noise. Noise is good, but it's not feel.
