Any have any experience, or advice on whether or not to attempt this? There's some gorgeous spalted Elm that I'd love to work with...

Elm as tonewood?

I've used splated elm once as an inlayed pickguard. I've read that elm is sometimes used for acoustic guitars.
It shouldn't affect much the whole sound as a thin top, isn't it? I've found here a few woods which are great but none of them are known as tonewoods, actually all of them are hardly known at all out of Perú and even here is quite hard to get them so I'm planning use one of them (or more depending in future projects) but as tops.

because of the dutch elm disease but its out there and it sure is pretty.

Spalted elm is only good for thin tops.
Good elmwood is used for full bodies by Ares, among others, and the result is very pleasing!

Never did use that elm for a bass. Bought a condo and my woodworking has been more functionally focused since then.

I used elm on one of my build, "Jessica" a 6-string neck-thruogh. Check her out here : Link Removed
Elm is a rare and beautiful wood, but be careful if it's spalted. The structural integrity might be too weak if the wood has been subjected to moist/water/outdoors too much. Just make shure it's solid and go right ahead.
