Unless I've forgotten how to google, there's remarkably few YouTube videos out there demoing or comparing EMG's bass pickups, specifically the P and PJ sets. I'm looking into a P/J set and I've read into the differences between the PJX, PJAX, and PJCSX - I understand the physical differences (ceramic, alnico, ceramic under steel, and the X vs non-X preamp) between all of them, and I understand on paper what those differences mean, but "on paper" doesn't always translate to reality very well.
I'm looking for something with strong lows and low-mids, but with clarity ("muddy" is a four letter word as far as I'm concerned). One of the main reasons I prefer a P or PJ setup over a Jazz setup is that most Jazz pickups are lacking in bottom end for me and don't have as much punch as I would like. I follow the "it's better to cut than boost" approach so as a general rule I'd rather have to roll back any boomy lows or cutting highs that might be present rather than having to boost the signal up to make up for a lack of them. I play exclusively flatwounds, if that makes a difference.
Having said that, my guess is that the PJAX set would be my best choice, but I would definitely appreciate any input you all could offer.
