EMG Select Pickups

What is everyone's opinion of EMG passive Select pickups?

They aren't as bad as people make them out to be.

IME they're nothing special. If you're doing a build or upgrading, there are better places to cut corners IMHO.

I've had a few basses with them, mostly like Hohner Steinberger copies - wasn't very impressed, especially when I used it for recording on a few songs vs. (at the time) my Rickenbacker and my Warwick Thumb. I ended up re-recording all the tracks that I used the EMG-Select bass on.

The current Hohner XZ-25 I just picked up was upgraded with EMG Active PU's and there's a huge difference in cut-through.

there have been a few instances where i've used the p-version on low-cost instruments. no complaints...

They arent bad but theres better pickups out there

A step up from the stock cheapies on many lower end basses but I have never like them. A mid grade pickup.
