an active set? would that require a volume knob to be installed as well?
Active EMGs use a lower value volume pot than passive basses. The down side is they need a battery, the upside is two pickups mix nicely without weird interactions.
Personally I love SX pickups and hate the EMG sound. I put active EMGs in a bass I used to own and hated them. But they do have a huge fan base these days. So that is up to you.
The big downside of SX pickups to me is single coil hum. So if I were to change pickups I'd go with something that lets you single neck or bridge pickups without hum. The key, I presume, would be what has great tone, is not hyper-expensive, and is a nice drop-in fit for the SX routs and string spacing.
I'd love to hear stories as to which pickup replacements have turned out great in 5 string SX basses.
