Eminar 8 ohm head with 2 cabs.

Hey there,

I've got an old eminar tube head, rated at 8 ohms. made in Australia in the 70s i think. I've also got two ampeg speakers, a PN-210HLF and a SVT210AV. both 8 ohms. Am I in danger of damaging the head if I run both at the same time?

i know it not a good to go below the manufacturers minimum ohm load, which you will be doing with those 2 cabs. maybe you could rewire them to be 16 ohms each for a total load of 8 when chained together. or maybe rewire to 4 ohms each and then run them in parallel or series, i forget which, for an 8 ohm load. someone with a better memory and knowledge will be along before too long to say what im trying to say. :bassist:

This is true for a solid state head, but OP is using a tube head.

Since you are using a tube head, you are probably okay running the head into a four ohm load. You may loose some tube life and you'll definitely loose some total output power, but it shouldn't permanently damage th head. I think.

Are you sure the head only has an 8 ohm tap?

I think that each cab it was shipped with was 8 ohms. As such, I think that if you plug one cab into the main out, and one into the ext out, then it will expect a 4 ohm load and you'll be okay. Not sure though. Which model is it?
 
Any tube amp is good for one click away. An amp rated for 4 is good for 2 or 8 and so on. One click away is all you may have though.
tube amps tend not to like driving a higher impedance than the tap. Lower, though not ideal, works.
