I have recently had to change out my tailwire, as the original snaped on me. In the process, I noticed my endpin assembly freely comes out. My question: is the endpin assembly supposed to be glued in place, or is it like the bridge and held in place by tension?

Double Bass Endpin Assembly Question

The endpin is held in by friction only. It should be fairly snug when you put it back in. If it's a little bit loose, you could shim it with a small piece of sandpaper. Don't make it so tight that you can't remove the endpin with some effort. If the hole is really out of whack, you'll either need to have the hole bushed or have a larger endpin installed.
